Please tell me about the number of new graduates you hire.
We decide the number of new graduates to hire based on our mid- to long-term business strategy. Recently, we have hired about 20 people each year, and we plan to continue hiring about the same number in the future.
Are there any particular qualifications or skills you require?
There are no required qualifications before joining the company. We believe that it is more important to express yourself honestly and have your own opinions than to have skills.
I have the impression that you can't get into a trading company unless you can speak English, but are language skills necessary?
We do not judge whether you pass or fail based on language ability alone. In fact, there are many employees who are not good at languages and are mainly active in Japan. On the other hand, those who want to expand their field of activity beyond Japan and work on the world, or who want to engage in business with overseas clients, will need a certain level of language ability. There are also opportunities for overseas postings, so you can expand your career by making use of your language ability.
Are there any quotas for international students?
There are no nationality requirements for applicants. We have many foreign employees working here. There is no special selection process for international students, and they will go through the same selection process as Japanese students.
I am currently overseas. Can I still participate in the selection process?
The selection process will be conducted online, so you can participate from anywhere in the world.
The trading company industry is generally seen as a liberal arts industry, but can people with science backgrounds thrive there?
Many employees with science backgrounds are active in various fields such as sales, product development, food safety, and new business development. In order to realize a technology strategy that utilizes its global platform, the Wismettac Group is proactively investing in technologies and patents in the Food Tech field that exist around the world, as well as building a foundation for open innovation. Therefore, we believe that opportunities for people with science backgrounds will continue to increase, especially in these areas.
What kind of people is the Wismettac Group looking for?
Wismettac Group places great importance on our values of being creative, committed, and ethical. We are looking for people who can empathize with our values, who can flexibly adapt to change, and who can tackle anything with enthusiasm as we are in a period of transformation that can be called the second founding of our company.
What is the Wismettac Group's approach to diversity management?
The Wismettac Group has approximately 400 employees in Japan and approximately 2,200 employees at overseas bases, and is made up of employees with not only differences in gender and nationality, but also various lifestyles and diverse values. As business diversification, reform, and globalization progress rapidly, it is essential for the Wismettac Group to secure diverse human resources in order to continue to create corporate value on the global stage. Regardless of gender, region, background, or values, we aim to improve the performance of the entire organization by having diverse human resources utilize new ideas and perspectives.
How are new graduates assigned to different departments?
When new graduates join the company, we first confirm their preferences and then make a comprehensive decision based on their aptitude, expertise, and the personnel plan of the department they will be assigned to. At the Wismettac Group, we strive to create an environment in which employees can maximize their aptitude and capabilities, work with high motivation, and demonstrate high performance.
Do you have a system in place to support employees' careers?
In order to foster a culture where employees can choose their own careers, we have established an internal recruitment system. Positions available through career hiring are also made public within the company, allowing employees to take on challenges that fit their own career plans, and we support spontaneous career development within the company. We also strive to support employees' careers by having them communicate with their superiors and OJT trainers on a daily basis, and by discussing mid- to long-term career development during semi-annual performance reviews.
Please tell me about your overseas assignments.
There are two patterns for overseas postings: one is to decide on an expatriate based on a comprehensive assessment of the person's aptitude, expertise, experience, language ability, etc., based on the needs of the posting, and the other is to recruit through internal recruitment. Based on our business strategy, we are expanding our business in five regions (Japan, North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, and China), and we expect the number of opportunities for Japanese people to be posted overseas to increase in the future for various purposes, such as overseas M&A and localization.
How is the evaluation carried out?
The Wismettac Group's evaluation system is determined through careful review at a moderated meeting* of the perspective of Our Values, an evaluation of the degree of competency demonstrated/growth at each job level (personnel evaluation), and an evaluation of the output against the goals set at the beginning of the period (performance evaluation).
The evaluation process begins with a self-evaluation of personnel and performance evaluations, followed by an interview with one's superior. The superior then holds a moderated meeting to evaluate and discuss the employee's treatment, which is then finally decided. Compensation is set from the perspective of "Pay For Performance, Pay For Job," taking into account the employee's duties, role, and market standards. Therefore, some employees are promoted to managerial positions early on, depending on their performance, regardless of their age, gender, or background.
* Moderation meeting: An evaluation meeting attended by managers and above from the department. Evaluations are not only determined by the direct superior, but also through discussions with various management members to align views, and evaluations are decided through this meeting.
Please tell me about the atmosphere at your company and workplace.
As for the company culture, I feel that many employees have the value of "mutual respect." Although each employee has a wide variety of backgrounds, there is a strong desire and spirit of challenge to create a better organization by communicating with everyone on an equal footing, regardless of length of service or age.
